Back @ it for my seventh time.
Last night was my first time doing standup comedy since September, and my seventh time ever.
I had tried a couple of times last year but wasn’t “randomly” selected and got discouraged. Work, family, and health stuff all rushed at me through the remainder of 2022, keeping me from performing.
Find an accountability partner!
Thanks to Caitlin Price for holding me accountable. We joked that we had each considered bailing on performing but knew the other person was expecting us. Having an accountability partner is a must to get going doing something you’re uncomfortable with. I’m thankful we both committed to doing it.
Kudos to Cortney Warner, who continues to host the weekly open mic. The commitment it takes to dedicate several hours a week to hosting is enormous, especially when you’re not being compensated. I’m thankful she always allows us a few minutes of stage time to test our material. Not all open mics are equal this way.
It was also nice to chat briefly with a few other comics. It’s an awkward experience trying to small talk a group of people who would seemingly rather be speaking to a microphone and audience than one-on-one. I always feel so shy and reserved talking to comics, which I know is imposter syndrome kicking my butt.
I’m proud of getting out of my comfort zone again. It was good to hear some solid comedy and see some diamonds in the rough. I categorize myself as simply - rough.
