The Universe and setting a big goal.
Can a run-in with a comic and a conversation with my daughter lead to a Netflix deal?
I took my kids to see Nope at the Belcourt theatre. The movie is fantastic if you haven’t seen it. Plus, I love supporting the Belcourt whenever I can. I always feel a sense of happiness and nostalgia when I enter that theatre. It was one of the places most appealed to me when we moved to Nashville in 2007.
I practically lived in movie theaters growing up in Toronto. I especially loved the indie, second-run places like The Bloor Cinema and Uptown. And I spent tons of time hanging around and renting movies from Suspect Video (RIP), but I digress.
As we entered the Belcourt, I ran into Andre there! I said, “We met last night at the open mic; you were great.” He looked up with a smile and exclaimed, “Hey, you’re the Canadian!” I think my kids were dumbfounded.
Andre said I did a good job and should hit the open mic at Cabana Taps, a nearby spot in Hillsboro Village. Was this the universe pushing me to keep going? Maybe.
I was out of town the following week, so I messaged my Third Coast class comedy group asking if they wanted to hit Cabana Taps on Wednesday, August 10. Kaitlin and Amy Goodgame agreed.
As we left the Belcourt after the film, my 15-year-old daughter inquired, “So what’s your plan with the comedy?”
I paused to think about it for a moment and shrugged my shoulders. “What do you think?”
She smiled and replied, “Netflix special.”
”Nice; how long do you think it will take me doing this to get a Netflix special?” I asked.
“Umm, three years.” She exclaimed without missing a beat.
“Three years it is!” I agreed. No pressure.
July 30, 2025, will be here before I know it. It’s time to hit more open mics!
